CryptoCard: RB-1 Additional Instructions

These are specific instructions pertaining to RB-1 tokens and are considered an addendum to the CRYPTOCard Token User Guide… consult the Guide for complete token usage instructions.

First Time Use of RB-1 Token

For Newer RB-1 hardware tokens with Serial Number on back of token beginning with "202":

  • RB-1 hardware tokens you receive from the Account Management Office have already been initialized for you; therefore, continue with Initial PIN Entry...
  • Press key labeled PASSWORD; token displays “PIN?”
  • Use the numeric keypad to enter in Initial PIN assigned by Account Management Office.  Use the CLR key to erase mistakes; press the ENT key when PIN is entered correctly. If successful, token displays “New PIN?"
  • Enter a new PIN ranging in length from a minimum of four to a maximum of eight decimal digits. Press ENT key when done. For security reasons, asterisks “*” are displayed in place of the actual digits keyed.  (If new PIN is same as old PIN or if the PIN you chose is too short, the token rejects it and re-displays “New PIN?” until you enter a valid PIN.)
  • If new PIN is acceptable, token displays “Verify” at which point you repeat the entry of the new PIN and press ENT again.  If the two PIN’s match, the token signals completion of this task by displaying “Card OK”.  Press PASSWORD to turn the token off. (If the “Verify” PIN entry doesn’t match the “New PIN?” entry, the token re-displays “New PIN?” so you can repeat the process of entering in a valid new PIN.)  [NOTE: If you delay entering a new PIN longer than the allotted timeout period, the RB-1 turns itself off and the old PIN remains in effect.]

For Older RB-1 hardware tokens with Serial Number on back of token beginning with "4990" or "2000":

  • RB-1 hardware tokens you receive from the Account Management Office have already been initialized for you; therefore, continue with Initial PIN Entry...
  • Press key labeled ON/OFF; token displays “PIN?”
  • Enter in Initial PIN assigned by Account Management Office.  If successful, token displays “New PIN?"
  • Enter a new PIN ranging in length from a minimum of four to a maximum of eight decimal digits. For security reasons, asterisks “*” are displayed in place of the actual decimal digit keyed.  (If new PIN is same as old PIN or if the PIN you chose is too short, the token rejects it and re-displays “New PIN?” until you enter a valid PIN.)
  • If new PIN is acceptable, token displays “Verify” and you must repeat the entry of the new PIN.  If the two PIN’s do match, the token signals completion of this task by displaying “Ready”.  (If the “Verify” PIN entry doesn’t match the “New PIN?” entry, the token re-displays “New PIN?” so you can repeat the process of typing in a valid new PIN.)  [NOTE: If you delay entering a new PIN longer than the allotted timeout period, the RB-1 turns itself off and the old PIN remains in effect.]

RB-1 Hardware Token Function Keys

For Newer RB-1 Hardware Tokens with Serial Number on back of token beginning with "202", there are six function keys:

  • PASSWORD

Turns token ON/OFF in Password Mode.  (NOTE: Token will automatically turn itself OFF after 60 seconds of non-use.)

  • DIGSIG

Turns token ON in Digital Signature Mode.

  • MENU

Provides access to the LCD contrast control and token resynchronization mode. The PIN may be required to access the Menu items.

  • CLR

Allows user to make corrections before the ENT key is pressed. Pressing this key completely clears the current entry. The user must then re-enter the correct data.

  • ENT

A key that almost completely mimics the "Enter" key on a computer keyboard.  It is used to confirm or complete any keypad inputs.

  • CHGPIN

Allows user to change his or her Personal Identification Number (PIN).

For Older RB-1 Hardware Tokens with Serial Number on back of token beginning with "4990" or "2000", there are 5 function keys:

  • ON/OFF

Turns token ON/OFF.  (NOTE: Token will automatically turn itself OFF after 60 seconds of non-use.)

  • CLR

Allows user to make corrections before the ENTer key is pressed. Pressing this key completely clears the current entry. The user must then re-enter the correct data.

  • ENT

A key that almost completely mimics the "enter" key on a computer keyboard.

  • CH/MAC (or just CH)

Usually used for resynchronizing the token by allowing end user to enter a challenge string to match the CRYPTOCard server's current challenge.

  • CPIN

Allows user to change his or her Personal Identification Number (PIN). This key is only active when the “Ready” prompt is displayed on the token.

Handling Precautions

The RB-1’s are equipped with liquid-crystal displays made of glass. Improper handling will cause this glass to break. A broken display is characterized by large black areas on the display screen that resemble ink blots. The following precautionary notes are included on an instruction card supplied with every token.

CAUTION!
The RB-1 token is equipped with a glass liquid-crystal display.

To prevent breakage, please observe the following:

  • DO NOT drop, sit on or crush the token.
  • DO NOT attempt to bend or twist the token.
  • DO NOT carry the token in a hip pocket wallet.
  • DO NOT place heavy objects on top of the token.

In addition, the following should be observed:

  • DO NOT attempt to dismantle or repair the token.
  • DO NOT immerse the token in water.
  • PROTECT the token from extreme heat and cold. CLEAN ONLY with a damp cloth if necessary.
  • DO NOT use any harsh chemicals.

Battery Replacement

The RB-1 is equipped with user replaceable batteries. Under normal usage, these batteries should last for up to 3 years before replacement is required. Replacement will become necessary when the display dims. Use only 2 new CR2016, 3 volt lithium coin cells from the same manufacturer. Use of the incorrect battery type or size will result in faulty operation. The batteries are hidden under the small cover on the back of the RB-1. Each battery is tightly fitted into place with the “+” sign facing up.

To replace the batteries, loosen the battery cover screw and carefully remove the cover. Carefully pry out one battery by placing a small screwdriver in the slot beside the battery. Insert a fresh battery ensuring that the “+” sign is facing up. Push the battery edge-first into the center contact, then firmly push down until it clicks into place. Remove the other old battery and replace it the same way.

WARNING!
Change the batteries ONE AT A TIME to prevent data loss!
