Installing and Configuring the VPN Software Components

This page explains the installation and configuration of the Cisco VPN Client on Windows 2000/XP.

Download the Client

  1. To download the latest VPN client, you will first have to read the Tunnel Use Advisory web page then click the [Accept] button at the bottom of the page. This will then take you to the VPN Client download web page.
  2. Click here to begin the download process.

Please note, you will need to know your BNL Domain username and password to access the VPN Client download web page. Find the Windows VPN client and double-click the link to download the zip file to your hard drive.

  3. Extract (unzip) the file to a location you can find later.
Press the [Extract] icon button or [Actions][Extract...] from the upper toolbar.

  4. The easiest place to find your file is by extracting it to your desktop.
      - Extract to: specify the file extraction location...
      -
    Press the [Extract] button.

  5. Look for the extraction folder after unzipping the file. Find and double-click on the  [vpnclient_setup.exe] file to begin the installation process.

Installing the Client

The procedure below describes the steps necessary to install and configure your Windows system to access the Cisco VPN server at BNL.

  1. Uninstall your old VPN client and reboot your system.
  2. Find the extracted VPN client folder on your system and locate the [vpnclient_setup.exe] file.
  3. The window below will appear after you have double-clicked the [vpnclient_setup.exe] file. Just follow the install prompts to install the client.

    Click the [Next] button.

Accept the license Agreement and click the [Next] button.

Review the VPN Application installation folder, then click the [Next] button.

Click the [Next] button to continue (this is your last opportunity to Cancel the installation process).

    The progress indicator will move.

Windows XP will detect the virtual device used as a VPN device. You will be given a warning that this virtual interface has not passed the Microsoft certification process.

    Click the [Finish] button.

Click the [Yes] button to restart you system so the new configuration changes can take effect.

  4. Once your computer is done rebooting, you will want to start up the new Cisco VPN Client from the Start Menu on your desktop.

    <Start><Programs><Cisco Systems VPN Client><VPN Dialer>

The actual VPN Dialer application is C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\VPN Client\ipsecdialer.exe, unless you specified a different directory during installation.

    To create a desktop icon of the ipsecdialer.exe file, right-click on the file in a Windows Explorer window;

<Select Send To> Select Desktop (create shortcut)

Once the new icon appears on the desktop, you'll probably want to right-click and rename it to Cisco VPN Client or VPN Dialer.

  5. After installing the VPN client try to start the client to make sure you see the VPN connection window and the BNL connection entry as shown below.

If no connection entries are available or the client simply does not work, follow the procedure listed below.

Reconfiguring the Client

  1. Download the BNL-PCF.zip file - click here
  2. Unzip the file and make note of the location.
  3. Open the VPN client and click on the import icon, a file dialog shown below will open.

  4. Locate the [ BNL.pcf ] file. Highlight it with your mouse and click open.

  5. The BNL connection entry will appear
