PFT Infiltration Study Sampling Procedure

Building Ventilation

Building infiltration samples are collected on tubes containing activated charcoal.  The samples can be collected actively, using a pump or programmable sampler to pull a volume of air through the tube. Or they can be collected passively using diffusion to bring the PFT in the air into contact with the charcoal where it is adsorbed.  Passive sampling is simple and unobtrusive.  Tubes are uncapped and placed in the area to be sampled.  Active sampling provides higher time resolution; current samplers can collect 24 sequential adsorbent tubes with exposure times of six minutes.  Passive samples must be exposed for several days to collect sufficient material to detect background PFT levels.

CATS tubes Used for passive sampling.  The tube on the left is open for sampling.  The tube on the right has both protective caps in place.
