Selection Procedure:

A panel made up of Outstanding Mentor Awardees from the previous year, and OEP staff will consider all nominations, and select the year’s Outstanding Mentors using the following criteria:

  • What did the student learn from their mentor?
  • Why does the student feel their mentor was outstanding?
  • Specific examples of how their mentor helped them.
  • Did the mentor provide background material prior to the student’s arrival at the lab?
  • Did the mentor provide a well-defined research project for the student that matched the student’s research interests?
  • Did the mentor provide support for student involvement in enrichment activities outside the student’s research project?
  • Did the mentor provide support for the development of the student’s research output, abstract, and education module (for PST students)?
  • Outstanding mentors should have demonstrated practices that go above and beyond the normal responsibilities to students in the mentoring relationship.

The number of awards given each year will be determined by the funding available.
