(HSRP) High School Research Program

The High School Research Program (HSRP) is an advanced high school program in which students are paired with a BNL scientist.

Brookhaven National Laboratory's primary focus as an institution is research and development. Student interns participate in ongoing programs where a BNL scientist mentors a student on a research project during a six week summer session. Students may also work during the academic year, usually to complete their project.

Students who are accepted for and in turn accept an internship will receive a guest appointment, and must complete BNL's orientation and safety training. Due to safety regulations, students under the age of 18 may not be allowed to do certain tasks or work with certain chemicals or reagents that may be permitted in other venues, such as high school or university labs.

BNL does not provide transportation or housing for the student.

Audience for This Program

11th and 12th grade students

Rules & Eligibility Criteria

The summer high school research program is open to students who have completed 11th or 12th grade. Preference is given to Suffolk County students.

1. Student must be available for the entire program, Monday - Friday, 8:30am-5pm.
2. Student must have reliable transportation to and from the Laboratory.
3. Student must have completed the 11th or 12th grade, and participated in BNL or other advanced science program.
4. Student must be at least 16 years old.
5. Student must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident Alien
