Brookhaven’s Media & Communications Office offers year-round internships for undergraduate and graduate students interested in science writing and communication.
Participants will work at least ten 40-hour weeks on science news and feature stories for a variety of audiences, including employees, scientists who come to Brookhaven to use our research facilities, and other readers of Brookhaven’s website. Interns also will work on projects that might include news releases, fact sheets, brochures, video scripts, and government-relations work.
Brookhaven is a world-leading multipurpose research institution with seven Nobel Prizes to its name. Located on a 5,300-acre site on Long Island, NY, the Laboratory performs research in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and advanced technology. In addition to Brookhaven’s 2,700 scientists, engineers, and support staff, some 5,000 researchers from across the country and around the world come to the Laboratory each year to use its research facilities and collaborate with its scientific staff. Science communication interns work at the level of the professional staff in the Media & Communications Office and have access to some of the most exciting stories and leaders in the scientific field.
Support: Weekly stipend ($500/wk for undergraduates; $600/wk for graduate students) plus dormitory-style, single-room housing on BNL's site
Undergraduate and graduate students
Applicants are eligible for up to a year after graduation. A journalism or science degree is preferred, but undergraduates with a strong interest in science communication also are encouraged to apply.
We're looking for applicants with well-developed writing skills and an interest in science. Writing samples are most important in the final decision; stories published in newspapers, magazines, or on websites intended for broad audiences are preferred.
Mail, email, or fax a cover letter, resume, and three writing samples to:
