(OEP) High School Science Bowl ®

The Department of Energy's National Science Bowl® is a highly publicized academic competition among teams of high school students who answer questions on scientific topics in astronomy, biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, earth, computer and general science.

Every year, Brookhaven National Laboratory hosts a regional competition. All high school students who attend school on Long Island are eligible. Entries of teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis until all available slots in the competition are filled.

The teams are comprised of five students and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. The competition consists of a round robin followed by a double elimination final. The questions are multiple choice and short answer in the categories of chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, astronomy, and general, earth, and computer science.

Awards

Prizes are awarded to the top four teams, and the winning team is invited to participate in the National Science Bowl. All students who participate will receive a Certificate of Participation. The National Science Bowl web site provides information for students, coaches, and volunteers.

Rules & Eligibility Criteria

Teams are selected on first-come, first-serve basis. Teams may not change student participants after submittal. A new registration will need to be submitted and will then go back into the queue for selection.

Deadline for first team submittal will be December 1, 2012. First Teams will notified by December 7, 2012.

Deadline for Second Team submittal will be December 28, 2012. Second Teams will be notified by January 4, 2013.

Deadline for Third Team submittals will be January 18, 2013. Third Teams will be notified of acceptance by January, 21, 2013.

All teams not accepted on their deadline date will be put in the queue for the next deadline date.

We will keep an alternate list until the day before the competition, in case of drop outs.

Application Process

To apply to the Regional Science Bowl at BNL, a coach must fill out the on-line registration form. Information will be sent to Science Department Chairs in October. On-line registration opens October 1, 2012.
