This special edition program includes time for students to collect data and make observations. The Soil and Rocks Program can be used as a jump start for your environmental education project, support for your class Open Space Stewardship Program, or as a fun way to get your students to learn about their environment as they visit the internationally recognized Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Details about the three activities are:
Soil Composition- Use scientific tools to examine and measure soil samples. Discuss soil components and how they affect living things.
Soil Texture- Use soil sieves to observe the difference in soil particle size. View soil particles through a microscope.
Rocks-Classify rocks according to observable characteristics. Learn why rocks break down into soil. Observe rocks and minerals with characteristics like magnetism and fluorescence.
