Community Summer Science Program

BNL conducts a "Community Summer Science Program" for high school students who have completed their sophomore or junior years and have not attended a previous BNL research program. This commuter program covers a five-week period from mid-July through mid-August and is intended to assist students with their science-based career plans.  Preference is given to Suffolk County students.

Check key dates for this year's program.

The program includes a morning lecture series, tours and demonstrations presented by BNL scientists, and afternoon workshops.

The morning lecture series provides a stimulating overview of forefront topics in important fields that students are likely to encounter as they pursue science careers. Group discussions and tours of our major facilities, in conjunction with the lectures and demonstrations, strengthen student experiences with the subjects and speakers.

Each week's lectures focus on a different subject or field and address several topics within that field. Typical topics include: RHIC, nanoscience, superconductors, proteonomics, high-energy physics at BNL, PET and MRI studies, The Very Early Universe, nuclear physics, chemistry and medicine, bioinorganic chemistry and the electron microscope, biological techniques in cancer therapy, and science at the National Synchrotron Light Source.

Afternoon workshops will be in the areas of biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science.

Student interns are selected on the basis of merit and motivation as demonstrated by high school records, recommendations and the specific science interests of the student.

BNL does not provide transportation for the student.

Application forms are available for download here, or can be picked up from guidance counselors, science teachers, and the BNL Science Education Center.
