Community Summer Science Program (CSSP)BNL's Community Summer Science Program (CSSP) is for high school students who have at least completed their sophomore year. This five week program is intended to assist students with their science-based career plans. Dates for the summer 2009 program are from July 13 to August 14. CSSP runs for full days, Monday through Friday during the
assigned weeks. The program consists of morning lecture series,
tours and demonstrations presented by BNL scientists, as well as
afternoon workshops. Each week's lectures focus on a different
subject or field and address several topics within that field.
Typical topics include: RHIC, nanoscience, superconductors,
proteonomics, high-energy physics at BNL, PET and MRI studies, The
Very Early Universe, nuclear physics, chemistry and medicine,
bioinorganic chemistry and the electron microscope, biological
techniques in cancer therapy, and science at the National
Synchrotron Light Source. Afternoon workshops are in the areas of
biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science. Please note the following: Participants must be at least 16 years old, and either US citizens or Permanent Resident Aliens (PRA). Preference is given to Suffolk County high school students. Due to heightened safety regulations, students under the age of 18 may not be allowed to do certain tasks or work with certain chemicals or reagents that may be permitted in other venues, such as high school or university labs.
