College
Mini-Semester Program -
Aimed at underrepresented groups, it brings
community college
students to BNL for one
week during college breaks to introduce
them to the Lab's science. Some of these students
return to BNL
as part of the Community College Institute (CCI)
or the Science Undergraduate Laboratory
Internship (SULI). Both of these programs
offer students the opportunity
to become part of a scientific research
team for a summer.
The SULI program also offers internships during
the
fall and spring semesters.
Science Learning Center - The BNL Science Learning Center provides elementary and
middle school students the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning
of physical science principles. The curriculum used conforms to
New York State math, science and technology curriculum standards.
The basic physics principles used are the foundation of on-going
research at BNL. The Learning Center programs also go "on the road"
to classrooms during the school year and to libraries in the summer.
Science
and Society Essay Contest: Local high school students are challenged
to think and write on a topic that examines the practice and ethics
of science. Brookhaven Science Associates and the Friends of Brookhaven
support this event.
Science
Fair Help Days are offered to local school districts and libraries
to help students plan science fair projects, which is a science
requirement in many Long Island school districts.
Regional
college tours: allow community and 4-year college students
to hear scientists talk about BNL research and to see the research
facilities firsthand. These tours are especially designed to
meet the needs of the visiting groups.
Adult
group tours: are given throughout the year to professional
organizations, elected officials, the media, senior citizens,
business organizations and other community groups to showcase
the current research taking place at the Laboratory.
