Participants must be at least 15 years of age by July 29, 2013, be a US citizen or Permanent Resident Alien (PRA) and have completed and submitted an application and essay.
Advanced high school students who have an interest in a science, engineering, or math-based career can explore their options this summer at one of the Department of Energy’s premiere facilities, Brookhaven National Laboratory. A variety of programs are available, each connecting to the Lab’s cutting-edge research and facilities. Programs include hands-on workshops, lectures by staff scientists and engineers, and tours of the Lab’s unique facilities.
Students will learn the fundamentals of calculus and how they are applied in classical mechanics, electrodynamics and statistical mechanics. Fundamentals reinforced through basic experimentation such as calculating the acceleration due to gravity and Faradays work in electromagnetic induction will be explored. The algebra used to calculate these concepts will be presented, but students will also be exposed to how scientists begin to mathematically model their findings with calculus.
Integrates biochemical and computer methods to solve protein structures. Students will grow and purify proteins and then determine their structure using Brookhaven’s National Synchrotron Light Source.
Hands-on studies during this week-long outdoor program. Watershed areas including fresh water river, estuary, salt marsh, benthic zone, and forest will be examined using scientific testing and sampling equipment. Activities include canoeing and a helmet dive in the BNL pool.
Provides students an opportunity to design and implement an ROV in the field. Students will use the environmental data collected by the ROV to study an aquatic benthic community. The culminating activity will take place in Peconic Bay.
Physics Fundamentals: August 12 - 16
LI Ecosystems: July 22 - 26, 2013
Structural Biology: July 29 - Aug 2, 2013
Marine Archeology: July 29 - Aug. 2, 2013
Each program is offered Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and costs $325.
To apply for these programs please complete the online application located on the
Long Island STEM Hub website.
The LI Regional STEM Hub, the third of ten forming in the Empire State STEM Learning Network, focuses on preparing students for the Long
Island workforce through enhanced science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) experiences for students and teachers.
