Background

Formed in 1947 from the former Army Base staff, the BNL Fire/Rescue Group is a full time, career Department.  Staffing is seven firefighters and one officer per shift (Fire/Rescue Staff & Organization) but can be five fighters and officer. The firefighters are trained to Firefighter Level III by International Fire Service Training Association standard (our training tower), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Fighter Level II standard, and (NFPA) Hazardous Material Technician Level (one of our Radiation Drills) and they are Suffolk County Certified Confined Space Rescuers an (extrication drill).

The BNL Fire/Rescue Group also provides emergency medical services to an on-site population of over 3500 people. A minimum of four members per shift hold New York State "Emergency Medical Technician - D" certifications ("D" is for defibrillation). The Group operates a New York State Certified Basic Life Support (2002 Freightliner, medium duty chassis). MEDEVAC services are available to BNL via the Suffolk County Police Department a (training session).

The single Fire Station is on the west side of the Site . Response time to the most remote section of the Site is less than eight minutes.

BNL participates in the Suffolk County Mutual Aid Agreement (Fire and Emergency Medical Services).  We also have Mutual Aid Agreements for Hazardous Materials with University of Stony Brook, the Town of Brookhaven, and the Town of Riverhead (one of our neighbors in to help on a brush fire).

Part of the responsibilities of the Fire/Rescue Group includes operating the Site Fire Alarm System, maintaining mechanical portions of the fire suppression systems, such as fire extinguishers (our DOT Hydrostatic test station), inspection of sprinkler valves, fire doors, fire hydrants. For the BNL Site, the Fire Rescue Group maintains SCBA equipment.
