Stephen R. Springston

Chemist

Springston is a Scientist and Mentor of three DOE Aerosol Observing Systems plus an additional two under construction as supported by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement's Climate Research Facility. These units largely designed by Springston and integrated at BNL are self-contained mobile laboratories equipped with instrumentation for in-situ characterization of aerosols and their precursors. In addition, he Mentors the trace gas suite of instrumentation for the ARM Aerial Aircraft Facility and has over 500 hours of research flying. His role includes coordinating six other Mentors across seven platforms. His research involves new instrumentation for trace gases, particularly ozone, oxides of nitrogen and carbon monoxide. Recent programs include the 2008 VOCALS study of marine stratus clouds of the west coast of South America, the 2010 CARES study of urban plumes downwind of Sacramento, CA, the 2010-11 StormVEx campaign in Steamboat Springs, CO and the 2011 Aerosol Lifecycle IOP at BNL.
