Through Partnerships
A
Workshop to Initiate and
Develop Multi-institutional Research Teams
Sponsored
by
The Department of Energy (DOE)
Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR),
and National Science Foundation EPSCoR Program
Hosted
by
Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL)
Where:
Brookhaven
National Laboratory / Wyndham Wind Watch Hotel
When:
Wednesday, May 30 and Thursday, May 31, 2001
What:
The workshop is
designed to give researchers from the EPSCoR states and the DOE
National Laboratories an opportunity to meet with leading
experts, to share their own work, and develop
multi-institutional research collaborations. There will be eight
focus areas featured at the meeting, which represent areas of
research excellence in the host laboratory, including:
-
Materials
Science, Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Chemistry
-
Chemistry,
Catalysis and Fuel Cells
-
Instrumentation
Engineering and Accelerator Physics
-
High
Energy Physics and Nuclear Science
-
Advanced
Computing
-
Energy
Technology and Renewables
-
Atmospheric
Sciences
-
Biology
and Medicine (Structural Biology, Genomics, Imaging, and
Radiation Responses)
In
addition to these breakout areas, there will be tours of
national user facilities.
Who:
The workshop provides a meeting place for researchers and
research administrators from universities in those states (and
Puerto Rico) that participate in the EPSCoR program, from the
DOE national laboratories, and from historically
minority-serving universities and colleges.
Why:
The primary purpose of the workshop is to stimulate and
facilitate research collaborations among researchers from EPSCoR
States and DOE Laboratories.
It should also provide participants with a better
understanding of DOE research priorities and help them to become
more competitive for mainstream funding.
We also intend to
give EPSCoR State Coordinators the chance to meet laboratory
EPSCoR and diversity representatives in parallel sessions.
How:
The program is
divided into plenary and breakout sessions. The plenary sessions
will focus on providing information regarding national
priorities for research and human resource development, and
descriptions of ongoing work. Each breakout session will focus
on one of the eight research foci, and include a presentation by
a leading DOE laboratory/EPSCoR state researcher. Breakout
sessions are aimed at identifying and developing new
collaborative research projects among the participants.
Information about the DOE /EPSCoR program and how to apply can
be found at.

There
will also be a poster session at which individuals can present
information on their current research activities and interests.
Registration
for attending the conference can be done on-line. Since the
number of participants is limited, those interested in attending
must have the endorsement of their DOE or NSF EPSCoR State
Contact listed below, or be recommended by their DOE Laboratory
Director. It is recommended that investigators interested in
attending, should first notify their EPSCoR State Contact /
Laboratory Director prior to registering and submitting an
abstract. Following registration, EPSCoR State Contacts will be
notified by email.
