`Schedule' set for review

The "Interagency Agreement Schedules Update/Report for Site Removal and Remedial Action," dated June 1996, which projects schedules and delivery dates for key Superfund related project documents, is available for public review at BNL's Administrative Record repositories.

The document outlines the schedule for each operable unit and each removal action conducted by Brookhaven National Laboratory's Environmental Restoration Division.

The public comment period for the document is from July 29, 1996 to August 30, 1996.

Waste Facility report ready

The investigation of soil contamination associated with Brookhaven National Laboratory's Hazardous Waste Management Facility (HWMF) is complete and available for review at the Lab's information repositories.

At this fall's public meeting, the "Remedial Investigation/Risk Assessment Report" for the cleanup of the HWMF in Operable Unit 1 (southern area of the Lab) and for the soil and groundwater investigation in Operable Unit VI (southeastern area of the Lab) will be discussed.

Investigation results will be used to complete the next phase of work, which is the feasibility study. Specifically, alternative remediation approaches will be evaluated.

Project eyes Lab's center

The major focus of the Operable Unit III investigation project is in the central portion of the BNL site, along the Lab's southern boundary, and in area south and southwest of the Lab.

Soil and groundwater investigations are underway. The investigation work remaining is on- and off-site monitoring well installation, sample gathering and analysis.

The area under investigation is just under 2,000 acres. The Lab is trying to define sources of contamination. These may include areas where chemicals were stored and handled and areas where spills were reported to have occurred.

Several potential source areas are: the vapor degreaser building, the site of the former chemistry buildings, and leaking sewer pipes in the Lab's developed central area.

The document "Operable Unit III Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study Work Plan," which provides background information on areas that may be potential sources of contamination in the central developed area of the Lab, is available for review in BNL's information repositories.
