The Baseline Human Health Risk Assessment: Operable Unit V, Peconic River is now available for review at the libraries listed below. This document is a supplement to the Risk Assessment performed as part of the 1998 Operable Unit V Remedial Investigation Report.
The document evaluates the potential human health risks to people who may now, or at some time in the future, be exposed to various contaminants that have been identified in the upstream areas of the Peconic River as a result of past operations at Brookhaven Lab.
The public will have opportunity to review and comment on decision documents, such as the forthcoming proposed remedial action plan; comments about this Risk Assessment may be submitted at that time. Final decisions about cleanup will be made under the Interagency Agreement between the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
The Peconic River is being addressed as part of a nationwide U.S. Department of Energy effort to clean up legacy waste. Brookhaven Lab is classified as an Inactive Hazardous Waste Site by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and is on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Priorities List.
