List of Species

Basic observational data regarding BNL herpetofauna have been collected for many years, however intensive surveys did not actually begin until the end of 2002. Since then, records of all herps found during onsite surveys have been placed in a comprehensive herpetofauna database. To date, 28 species have been documented and entered into the database. This includes the discovery of several species that had never been reported from BNL (e.g., northern redbelly snake, eastern worm snake, four-toed salamander). In addition to the 28 species in our database, earlier records, reports, photos, and sightings confirm the presence of several additional species onsite. Finally, based on information from surrounding land areas, we expect to eventually document the presence of yet a few more species that have never been documented or only reported anecdotally onsite. The following pages give an in-depth look at the results of our inventory efforts and our future expectations.
