Vegetation Map
This map depicts vegetation distribution at Brookhaven National Laboratory. It was developed using aerial photography, followed by "ground-truthing" (confirmation out in the field). This information can be used for planning and evaluation. For example, it can be used to predict fire behavior, and, when coupled with data on distribution of forest-damaging insects, to see effects on forests and how things change over time.
The map is color coded. For example, blue represents wetland species such as red maple; browns and greens are upland forests, dark green areas are white pine stands (planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's), and gold represents areas that have been disturbed.
