This program area provides information on the Accelerator Facilities here at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. It also provides guidance on the processes necessary for BNL accelerator facilities to comply with DOE Order 420.2B "Safety of Accelerator Facilities."

Following the Accelerator Safety Subject Area and this guidance ensures that all facilities categorized as accelerators establish the necessary documentation, such as accelerator safety envelope, operational procedures, and personnel qualifications, which are needed to establish an authorization basis for the facility. See the Facility Hazard Categorization Subject Area for more information on hazard categorization, and see the Facility Authorization Basis Program Description for information on the Laboratory's overall program. The Accelerator Safety Subject Area also helps to standardize the content and format of the Safety Assessment Document (SAD), Accelerator Safety Envelope (ASE), and other required submittals to facilitate review at all levels.

Requirements of the Accelerator Safety Subject Area and DOE Order 420.2B "Safety of Accelerator Facilities" apply to the entire accelerator facility, which includes the accelerator itself, the experimental areas, and associated areas and equipment, using or supporting the production of accelerated particle beams to which access is controlled to protect the safety and health of persons. Uncontrolled office and support spaces are not considered part of the accelerator facility.
