BNL's SBMS Personal Protective Equipment subject area specifies that employees/guests:  Use a commercial laundry (not home washing) for lab coats, coveralls, fire-protective clothing, and BNL-provided uniforms contaminated by a hazardous substance. There is an existing BNL program in place that has recently been updated to assist line organizations in implementing this policy.

Departments/Divisions will be responsible for placing their own requisitions to PPM for lab coat services (procuring the coats as well as cleaning).  A separate listing of the names and the sizes required for this procurement is also required.  

Departments will be responsible to set up their own collection/pickup points and make employees aware of the location.  There should be one pickup location per building.  Departments should also include laundering requirements of lab coats in their experimental reviews when Particularly Hazardous Substances (Carcinogens, Reproductive Toxins, and Highly Acute Toxins) are included.  Pickup for laundering of lab coats is weekly.  Employees should have enough lab coats assigned to them to protect them during this rotation period.  Dial Ace Laundry is on site weekly to perform pickups for other uniforms.  Most women prefer the men’s lab coats due to the pocket orientation and fit.  Women should order the Men’s Lab Coat.  Below is a size chart to help you choose the appropriate Men’s Lab Coat Size.

 The mechanism for BNL departments to institute a lab coat laundering program is similar to that of BNL Trade/Shop personnel. Please follow the procedure below or contact Jennifer Cafiero at x7378, Contracts & Procurement, for additional information:

Creating Initial Requisition

1.       Departments create a requisition

2.       Include the number of items (lab coats, coveralls, and uniforms), size and Last Name for each individual on a separate listing

3.       Departments provide account # to be charged.

4.       Departments set up a Collection Vessel at the pick up spot (one per building)

5.       Provide the pick up/drop off spot in the comments section of the requisition.

6.       Dial Ace Laundry will pick up weekly

7.       There is a weekly rental charge per item whether it is washed or not. (approximately .40/wk/piece)

Revising Existing Requisition

1.       Departments perform a change order and add a line item to their requisition

2.       Departments add or subtract names of PPE users and number of items on the req.
