Hazardous Material Transportation Safety - Training & Qualifications
A BNL web based training course
has been prepared entitled “Transportation of Hazardous Materials General
Awareness” This course is available through the
BNL Training and
Qualification Web Page.
The course takes approximately 30 minutes to go through and is intended to
cover two levels of training; the difference between the two levels is the
requirement to take the test for level 2.
Level 1 Training: This training is for staff that transfer hazardous
material on site-in quantities greater than materials of trade and staff who
offer up materials for transportation off-site. This level of staff would
need to take initial training only with no refresher. Hazard Communication
training is a pre-requisite.
Level 2 Training: Those staff that are considered “hazmat employees”
under the Department of Transportation.
Hazmat Employee means a person who is employed by a hazmat employer and who
in the course of employment directly affects hazardous materials
transportation safety. This term includes an owner-operator of a motor
vehicle, which transports hazardous materials in commerce (off-site). This
term includes an individual, employed by a hazmat employer who, during the
course of employment effect hazardous material in commerce (off-site) by:
Loading, unloading, or handling hazardous materials;
Manufacturing, testing, reconditioning, repairing, modifying, marking, or
otherwise represents containers, drums or packagings as qualified for use in
the transportation of hazardous materials;
Preparing hazardous materials for transportation;
Is responsible for safety of transporting hazardous materials; or
Operating a vehicle used to transport hazardous materials.
The course will help you determine if you are a “hazmat employee” and are
required to take the test. Hazmat employees must take the initial training
and a refresher every 3 years to meet DOT requirements.
