The Laboratory administers a series of benefits which provides income
continuation when employees are absent from work for medical
reasons.
The regular sick leave program provides paid leave based primarily
on credit accrued through months of service. As a supplement to the
regular program payments are made in accordance with New York State
law to disabled employees who have no regular sick leave available.
In addition, absences for doctor or dentist visits are allowed at
full pay, subject to established limitations.
Employee eligibility for each of the foregoing benefits is dependent
upon his or her employment category, as described in this Section.
Laboratory supervisors have the major responsibility for promoting
employee understanding of the purpose and proper use of the sick
leave program. Excessive sick leave is a frequent contributory
factor in unsatisfactory job performance, which in turn may lead to
dismissal.
