The discovery of a Higgs boson has been reported with great fanfare. I will present an introduction to the Large Hadron Collider explaining why this new result is so important and what the next steps are. This includes why we were looking for it in the first place, why we needed high energy collisions to see it, how we know we've seen a new particle, and what the next steps are.
