Congratulations on your employment at Brookhaven!

Welcome Message From the Director

Doon GibbsHello. I’m Brookhaven Lab Director Doon Gibbs. Brookhaven has a rich history of outstanding scientific achievement that spans more than six decades. That achievement is directly linked to the talented and dedicated people we have working here. The unique skills you bring to Brookhaven are vital for our continued success in this decade and beyond - whether you are a scientist or someone whose work helps make the science happen.

So, welcome to Brookhaven! You are now part of our team, working together to make exciting scientific discoveries. We work hard and we work safely — that’s very important — in a spirit of inclusion and mutual respect. As a new employee, you’ll find people whose job it is to help you settle in and understand the many benefits available to you, which range from health to finance and recreation. In turn, we look forward to benefiting from your contributions here and hope to see you — and the Laboratory — reach all of our goals.

What to Expect on Your First Day

In order to have a productive first day of work, you should plan on having the following items and information with you. Please call us if you have any questions.

Please read the important information contained in this file (.pdf)

  • Proper Identification - You must provide proper identification as proof that you are eligible to work in the United States.  See the I-9 form that describes acceptable forms of identification.

Brookhaven National Laboratory participates in E-Verify, which requires us to verify the identity and employment eligibility of all persons hired to work in the United States.  Brookhaven National Laboratory will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each new employee’s Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.

Please ensure that the forms of documentation you provide to support your I-9 identification requirements match your name.  For instance, if you recently had a name change, but did not modify your social security card, your data will not match.

  • Dependent Information – You will need to provide the name, date of birth, social security number, and appropriate documentation - i.e.; marriage certificate, birth certificate - for all your dependents in order to complete your medical and dental insurance paperwork. If you have any questions, please call.
  • Paycheck Direct-Deposit – Many employees like the convenience of having their paycheck automatically deposited into their bank account. We encourage you to take advantage of this option. If you choose to do so, please fill out the form and attach a voided check or voided deposit slip. In addition, we have a branch of Teachers Federal Credit Union on site, which you may join at any time.
  • Number of deductions on Form W-4 – Please be sure that the total number of allowances you are claiming is listed on line number 5 for your Federal and New York State income tax. If you are uncertain about the number of exemptions you should claim, please consult with an accountant.
  • Beneficiary Information – You will need to provide the name, address and birth date of all beneficiaries for your life insurance policy.
  • Emergency Contact Information – Complete the emergency card with the name, address and telephone numbers (day and evening) of two people to contact in the event of an emergency.
  • Vehicle Information – You will be asked to provide make, model and license plate information for each vehicle that you will be driving on site.  You will also need to show your cars’ registration.

Your first day at Brookhaven National Laboratory will consist of a variety of orientation activities.

  • Check-In – All necessary paperwork will be collected and additional paperwork will be completed.  This includes an Emergency Contact card, W-4, I-9, Conflicts of Interest Form, Patent Agreement, Direct Deposit, and any Visa paperwork, if needed.
  • Brief Overview of BNL Lab
  • Sign-Up for Benefits
  • Badging/Vehicle Registration – You will have your picture taken for your BNL ID badge and receive a sticker for your vehicles.
  • GET Training (New Employee/Guest Orientation) (1:30-3:00) – Safety Training, which includes an overview of ergonomics, cyber security, traffic safety, etc.
