Euro coins in circulation. Complete changeover to the Euro in public administration. National banknotes and coins start being withdrawn. Start of short dual circulation period. All scriptural transactions must be denominated in euro.

Greece adopts the single currency.
January 1, 1999
The euro becomes the currency for 12 Member States. The national currencies became `non-decimal' sub-units of the euro : conversion rates between each of them and the euro irrevocably fixed.
