Secure access to internal BNL email servers via the secure POP and IMAP protocols is now available.



How to configure your email client

Incoming Server - Retrieving Email From Internal Servers

  • Set the incoming email server to be sun2.bnl.gov or mail.bnl.gov
  • For secure IMAP - set the port number to 993 and the connection to use SSL always.
  • For secure POP - set the port number to 995 and the connection to use SSL always.

Outgoing Server - Sending Email
You may use smail.bnl.gov for outgoing email delivery as well.

  • Set the outgoing email server to be bnl.gov
  • Set the port number to 25
  • Set the connection to never use SSL

Eudora 5.2

The screen shots below show the proper settings for using secure IMAP for retrieving email (Incoming) for Eudora 5.2

  • Open Eudora
  • Right click on the default < Dominant > person shown on the Personalities tab in the left pane
  • Select the < Properties > menu option


 

  • Select the < Generic Properties > tab
  • Configure the server settings using the < Incoming/Outgoing Server > information
  • Insert < Logon Name > and < Default Domain >


 

  • Click the < Incoming Mail > tab
  • Configure the server settings using the < Incoming/Outgoing Server > information
  • Click < OK >


 

  • Click on the < Mailboxes > tab in the left main window pane then double-click your < Inbox >
  • Done

Netscape 4.77

The screen shots below show the proper settings for using secure IMAP for retrieving email (Incoming) for Netscape 4.77

  • From your taskbar, click < Start >< Programs ><Netscape Communicator >
    < Utilities >< User Profile Manager >


 

  • Click < New > to create a new profile


 

  • Configure the < Outgoing Mail Server > settings using the information above


 

  • Configure the < Incoming Mail Server > settings using the information above


 

After finishing the User Profile Manager start Netscape and open the Netscape Inbox Email Client. Right click the < smail.bnl.gov > folder in the left pane and select < Mail Server Properties >. The following window should appear.

  • Select the < General > tab
  • Check the < Remember Password > box, then click the < IMAP > tab


 

  • Click the < Use Secure Connection (SSL) > box on the IMAP tab
  • Click < OK > to close the window


 

  • Click < Get Messages > to connect to smail.bnl.gov

Netscape 6.2

The screen shots below show the proper settings for using secure IMAP for retrieving email (Incoming) for Netscape 6.2

  • Open your email window
  • Select < Edit >< Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings >< Server Settings >
  • Already have an email account - you may update the existing account or setup a new one
  • Lets setup a new account, click < New Account >

  • Select < ISP or email provider >< Next >

  • Insert your < User Name >
  • Insert your < Email Address >< Next >

  • Select < POP > or < IMAP >
  • We'll select  < IMAP > for this example
  • Configure the server settings using the < Incoming Server > information
  • Click < Next >

  • Select < Outgoing Server (SMTP) > in the same window to configure the outgoing email server
  • Configure the server settings using the < Outgoing Server > information

  • Select < OK >
  • Close and restart Netscape

Netscape 7.0

The screen shots below show the proper settings for using secure IMAP for retrieving email (Incoming) for Netscape 7.0

  • Open your email window
  • Select < Edit >< Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings >< Server Settings >
  • Already have an email account - you may update the existing account or setup a new one
  • Configure the server settings using the < Incoming Server > information
  • Insert your < User Name >

  • Select < Outgoing Server (SMTP) > in the same window to configure the outgoing email server
  • Configure the server settings using the < Outgoing Server > information
  • Close and restart Netscape

Outlook Express 6.0

The following screen shots show the configuration windows where POP and IMAP values are configured.

  • Open Outlook Express 6.0
  • Select the < Tools >< Accounts > then click the < Mail > tab
  • Already have an email account - you may update the existing account or setup a new one
  • Select the mail account to be configured for POP/IMAP and click the Properties button
  • Configure the server settings using the < Incoming Server > information

  • Select < Advanced > in the same window to configure the outgoing email server
  • Configure the server settings using the < Outgoing Server > information
  • Close and restart Outlook Express

Outlook 2000 SR-1

To add and edit mail profiles for Outlook 2000 on Windows 2000 double-click the Mail icon in the control panel. The following screen shots show the progression necessary to reach the POP and IMAP configuration items.

    

  • You may update an existing profile or setup a new one
  • Lets setup a new one
  • Click < Add... >

  • Select < Internet E-Mail >
  • Click < Next >

  • Click < Setup Mail Account >

  • Select either < General >
  • Fill in the fields below

  • Select < Servers >.
  • Configure the server settings using the < Incoming/Outgoing Server > information
  • Insert your < Account Name > and < Password >
  • Decide if you want to < Remember Password > or not

  • Select either < Connection >
  • Select the correct connection configuration for your application

  • Select < Advanced >.
  • Configure the server settings using the < Incoming/Outgoing Server > information
  • Click < Apply >< OK >

  • Click < Next >

  • Choose your < Personal Folder > path

  • Select < Finish >
  • Close and restart Outlook

Outlook 2002

To add and edit mail profiles for Outlook 2002 on Windows 2000 double-click the Mail icon in the control panel. The following screen shots show the progression necessary to reach the POP and IMAP configuration items.

    
 

  • Select < E-mail Accounts >


 

  • From here you can add a new account to use internet email or reconfigure an existing profile
  • To add a new account, select < Add... >
  • To update an existing account, select < Change... >

  • Select either < Pop3 > or < IMAP >
  • Let's configure for < IMAP >


 


 

  • Select either < General >
  • Fill in the fields below


 

  • Select either < Connection >
  • Select the correct connection configuration for your application

  • Select < Finish >
  • Close and restart Outlook
