Unix Services General Information Need Help
|
Unix ServicesSystem AdministrationUnix Services Managed SystemsUnix Services provides system administration services for all Unix and Linux based general purpose computing resources at BNL. When discussing these services and the extent to which ITD is involved in the operations of maintaining a computer system, we must answer the question, "What is a Unix Services Managed System?". That question is explored and answered under the web page on Unix Managed Systems. Central System AdministrationCentralized administration provides the ability to enforce DOE mandates across the enterprise. Further, it improves our overall security posture and allows users to receive faster response to support requests. This is the continual improvement of our Unix IT management as discussed in the web page on Central System Administration. Supported Operating SystemsBrookhaven National Lab has taken a relatively liberal approach to supporting a wide number of operating systems (OS), especially compared to other National Labs. It requires much effort to vet mandatory software packages for all OS releases and architectures. For the full detail, please review the Supported Operating Systems list. Monitoring ServicesProvided as part of Central System Administration and Unix Managed Systems, ITD Unix Services maintains instances of the Osiris host integrity monitor and the Nagios infrastructure monitor. These tools give us insight into the state and health of systems we manage.
To reach ITD Unix Services for any support issues, please contact the ITD Helpdesk via email (itdhelp@bnl.gov) or call x5522. In any communications, please include the name of the machine(s) in question, as well as their operating system, software package and other relevant information which will allow ITD to help you more effectively. |
