Generating keys for the SSH Gateway

Unix ( Protocol 2 )

Once you obtain an account on the SSH Gateway (call the Account Management Office x4444 for an account), you must generate your private and public SSH keys:

(on your local machine) type:  ssh-keygen -t dsa
 

Generating Public/Private dsa Key Pair

• Enter file in which to save the key (/home/username/.ssh/id_dsa): type: <enter>   (you want to use the default)
• Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase): (enter a passphrase)
    - All users MUST USE a passphrase
  
  Enter same passphrase again: re-enter the password
  
  Your identification has been saved in /home/username/.ssh/id_dsa.
  
  Your public key has been saved in /home/username/.ssh/id_dsa.pub.
  
  The key fingerprint is:
  ed:85:92:ec:27:51:b9:a7:7b:a7:ba:7c:bf:e7:0a:01 username@somemachine
  
  (on your local machine) type: eval `ssh-agent`
  
  type: ssh-add ~/.ssh/id_dsa
  
  Test the connection
  
  type: ssh ssh.bnl.gov
  
  All users MUST USE a passphrase
   

Email Public Key to the ITD Helpdesk

You MUST email this Public Key to the ITD Helpdesk who will forward this to the Account Management Office. You have two options; you can email the Public Key by using your favorite email client or by using our online form.

• Local Email Client
  - Subject Title: SSH Key for Account
  - Message Body: Insert or paste your Public Key from your clipboard by hitting Ctrl+V
  - Email to: itdhelp@bnl.gov
• Online Form
  - Click here to send your Public Key using the online form
