Use of ASCII Symbols

Symbols are problematic when submitting text through the web or when converting between software applications.

ASCII symbols created using a combination of the Alt key and the number keypad on your keyboard will retain formatting when font changes occur or when converted to other programs. The list of available symbols is short, however. Please use ASCII symbols whenever possible.

You may either select the symbol with your mouse and copy it from here to paste into your web page or use the designated ALT key. To use ALT keys, hold down your right ALT key and use the number keypad on your keyboard to enter the appropriate number listed below.

One of ten national laboratories overseen and primarily funded by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Brookhaven National Laboratory conducts research in the physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies and national security. Brookhaven Lab also builds and operates major scientific facilities available to university, industry and government researchers. Brookhaven is operated and managed for DOE's Office of Science by Brookhaven Science Associates, a limited-liability company founded by Stony Brook University, the largest academic user of Laboratory facilities, and Battelle, a nonprofit, applied science and technology organization.
