Cookie Usage

The following information about the use of Cookies were taken out of an ITD department memo that was received from DOE HQ (Secretary Abraham) which was forwarded to all BNL Department Chairs on 6/14/2001.

The Department of Energy (DOE), has directed BNL to review all of its websites that are publicly accessible to ensure they comply with DOE's established policy on Internet privacy. BNL websites that are publicly accessible will not use "persistent cookies" (i.e. small permanent files placed on a client by a web server) unless the following conditions are met:

• The site gives clear and conspicuous notice of their presence.
• There is a scientific- or business- requirement to gather data on the website.
• There are appropriate and publicly disclosed privacy safeguards for handling the data.
• The Laboratory's Director and the DOE provide written, personal approval.
• Privacy policy statements are provided and displayed, even if the site does not collect information. Text that can be used in such statements is given in DOE/IG-0493.
