Port Jefferson, at one time a major port for sailing ships, is now a tourist-oriented village, with pleasant walks and interesting restaurants, including Danfords. Danfords is about 2 km from the nearest station of the Long Island Railroad, which offers service to mid-town Manhattan, about 100 km away. The wine-producing region of Long Island, to the east of Port Jefferson, is accessible by car. Brookhaven Lab is about 15 km from Port Jefferson. The average maximum temperature in mid-October is 64F/18C and the average minimum is 40F/4C.

Directions to Danfords: Take the Long Island Expressway (Route I-495) to Exit 64. Take the exit to Route 112 North. Follow Route 112 for 8.5 miles (crossing Routes 25, 83 and 347 in turn). Route 112 ends where it joins Route 25A. Continue straight ahead from the end of Route 112 onto Route 25A. Follow Route 25A about 2 miles across train tracks and down a steep hill into the village of Port Jefferson. At the harbor, Route 25a turns left, but you will turn right and see Danfords immediately on your left. Alternatively, one can take the Long Island Railroad from Manhattan to Port Jefferson Station, followed by a short cab ride. There is also a ferry from Bridgeport, CT.
