Brookhaven Medical Department

The Medical Department's logo combines the traditional Aesculapius insignia of a staff and serpent with an atom, symbolizing the many advances in nuclear medicine made by BNL medical researchers over the past 50 years. BNL scientists work with in a transdisciplinary environment to develop new scientific tools to address problems of major national impact. There are special Programs in Space Research, Radiotracer Chemistry, Instrumentation and Biological Imaging, Radionuclide and Radiopharmaceutical Isotope Production and Cancer Diagnostics and Therapy. New scientific tools are broadly applicable to problems in energy and the environment and to NIH and industry sponsored studies for in vivo molecular imaging.

One of ten national laboratories overseen and primarily funded by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Brookhaven National Laboratory conducts research in the physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies and national security. Brookhaven Lab also builds and operates major scientific facilities available to university, industry and government researchers. Brookhaven is operated and managed for DOE's Office of Science by Brookhaven Science Associates, a limited-liability company founded by the Research Foundation of State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, the largest academic user of Laboratory facilities, and Battelle, a nonprofit, applied science and technology organization.
