UEC Plans for 2012 Annual NSLS/CFN Users Meeting

At the Town Meeting on November 10, 2011, the Users’ Executive Committee announced plans for the 2012 joint NSLS/CFN Users’ Meeting, scheduled next year for May 21-23. The theme of this upcoming meeting, “Expanding the Toolbox for 21st Century Science,” will highlight the new tools and new science at NSLS and the CFN, as well as those planned for NSLS-II.

We are extremely pleased to host Harriet Kung, Associate Director of Science for Basic Energy Sciences, for the meeting. In light of the rapidly approaching completion of NSLS-II and associated shutdown of NSLS, we are scheduling a significant discussion on planning for the transition from NSLS to NSLS-II for the afternoon of Monday, May 21. User feedback will be critical for moving forward on this issue, so all NSLS (and prospective NSLS-II) users are strongly encouraged to attend this session.

Please note several format changes for the 2012 Users’ Meeting:

  • New social event: Sunday Social. Vendor setup will be held on Sunday, May 20, and will be accompanied by a networking event open to all registered meeting participants.
  • The plenary meeting will be held in two sessions (Monday and Tuesday mornings), with Monday afternoon dedicated to the NSLS/NSLS-II transition discussion and CFN-based workshops; NSLS and CFN user workshops will also be hosted Tuesday afternoon and all day on Wednesday.
  • Poster titles will be registered at the same time as the meeting registration to avoid turning away poster requests.
  • Postdocs will be allowed to register at the student pricing. This pricing has been implemented on a trial basis and is meant to encourage postdoc participation. PIs: please take this opportunity to send your students and postdocs to the users’ meeting!

We have received a record number of user workshop proposals this year. Thank you to everyone for the overwhelming response!

The meeting banquet will be held inside NSLS-II, allowing users to take a look at the progress on the new facility while enjoying the general merrymaking associated with this event. Posters describing the NSLS-II beamlines are expected to be included in the party decorations.
