Photowalk 2012

NSLS, NSLS-II, the STAR and PHENIX detectors at RHIC and the RHIC tunnel will be open to amateur and professional photographers registered for Photowalk 2012 at Brookhaven Lab. This international photo contest is taking place in September at multiple labs around the world. In the U.S., the event is planned for Saturday, September 22, with Brookhaven and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory participating.

Photon Sciences Directorate volunteers Marc Allaire, Frank DePaola, Mirian Fernandez Garcia, Bernie Kosciuk and Zhong Zhong will give the photographers “behind-the-scenes” access to scientific equipment that is sure to inspire their creative talents.

NSLS will be operating that day, so users will see extra activity on the experimental floor. Construction is not planned for NSLS-II, but magnets in the storage tunnel will be waiting for the cameras.

Last year, Photowalk was held primarily at particle physics labs. Each institution selected the best three photos (five this year) and entered them in the global competition. Prizes were awarded to the winners at the 2011 AAAS meeting. You can view the winners at the Particle Physics Photowalk website. Participating institutions this year include Fermilab, TRIUMF, the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, DESY, and several science and technology sites in the UK.
