Brookhaven National Laboratory Honored by Long Island Technology Hall of Fame

Brookhaven National Laboratory has been honored by the Long Island Technology Hall of Fame as its 2013 Corporate Leader in Technology, one of several awards presented during the Hall of Fame's annual induction ceremony on March 6 in Garden City. The Laboratory was celebrated for its exceptional accomplishments and dedication to work in science and technology.
The Long Island Technology Hall of Fame recognizes, honors, and preserves the contributions, accomplishments, and dedication of historical figures or current leaders in science or technology who have an impact on society. The organization raises funds for scholarships, outreach, and research initiatives that will ensure Long Island's economic and intellectual leadership.
Now in its 12th year, the event highlighted Brookhaven as a historical and current leader in science and technology. A video premiered at the celebration showcased the Lab's growth from an Army base in 1947 to an innovative leader in fields ranging from energy research to nuclear physics, and nanotechnology to supercomputing.

In previous years, the Long Island Technology Hall of Fame has inducted several Brookhaven scientists and administrators. This year's award recognizes the contributions of the thousands of employees and visiting researchers that have made the Laboratory a valuable resource for research, education, and commerce in the region.
"The event does a very nice job of honoring significant individuals that have made special contributions to science and technology, such as Brookhaven's former directors Sam Aronson and Nick Samios, both past honorees," said Associate Laboratory Director for Global and Regional Solutions Gerald Stokes. "This year, the Long Island Technology Hall of Fame honored the [entire] Lab and its history of contributions."
The video, produced by Brookhaven's Media & Communications Office and Lab videographer Alex Reben, featuring images taken by Lab photographers over the past six decades, "was a nice tribute to the more than 25,000 people who have worked here over that time and their accomplishments," Stokes said.
In addition to recognizing Brookhaven Lab, the ceremony honored the 2013 inductees into the Long Island Technology Hall of Fame, all well-known leaders of technology in their fields. They included Colin Goddard, chairman and chief executive officer of Coferon; Arie Kaufman, distinguished professor and chair of the Computer Science Department and chief scientist of the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology at Stony Brook University; and Bob Klein, vice president of Engineering and Global Product Development in the Military Aircraft Systems and Aerospace Systems Sector at Northrup Grumman Corp.
