Building Life-saving Batteries

The engineering feat that enables a device to jolt a dangerously misbehaving heart back to its normal rhythm and save millions of lives is currently featured in an episode of the American Chemical Society’s Prized Science web series. Esther Takeuchi, chief scientist in Brookhaven Lab’s Global and Regional Solutions Directorate and joint appointee in Stony Brook University's Department of Materials Science and Engineering, won this year’s E. V. Murphree Award in Industrial and Engineering Chemistry for her work on the battery that powers implantable cardiac defibrillators.
