  • On the cover of the July/August issue of Synchrotron Radiation News (SRN) is the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) microcalorimeter at NSLS beamline U7A. Led by Dan Fischer, the NIST Synchrotron Science Group at NSLS operates a suite of three NIST spectroscopy beamlines to study the structure and chemical nature of diverse materials. NIST is establishing an NSLS-II spectroscopy suite of three state-of-the-art high-throughput beamlines with x-ray diffraction capability to measure the electronic, chemical, and structural properties of almost any material — non-destructively and often at the nanoscale. The microcalorimeter pictured on the cover of SRN will be moved to beamline SST at NSLS-II. Through user facilities like NSLS and NSLS-II, NIST and the Department of Energy have a long-standing partnership to promote innovation and enhance U.S. industrial competitiveness. According to Fischer, NSLS-II’s intensity will enable enhanced sample throughput at least 10 times over NSLS. “The energy range of the SST beamline allows our new detector to span more elements of the periodic table than beamline U7A, providing access to a much broader range of materials,” said Fischer.
  • The new Maia detector, developed jointly by the Australian national science agency, CSIRO, and Brookhaven Lab, is featured in the article “Art from Science,” which appeared in the Cornell Alumni Magazine.
