Gary Miglionico

Gary Miglionico, a design engineer in Brookhaven Lab's Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD), died on Oct. 11. He was 55 years old.

Miglionico arrived at the Lab as a guest designer for the Accelerator Department on Dec. 30, 1992. On April 24, 1995, he joined the Lab as a senior drafting specialist for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) project, which became C-AD in 1997. Miglionico was promoted to senior designer in April 2005, joined the National Synchrotron Light Source II project in December 2006, and returned to C-AD in August 2007.

As a mechanical design engineer, Miglionico developed detailed two- and three-dimensional mechanical designs, based on physicists and engineers' conceptual designs for equipment such as magnets and vacuum chambers. Manufacturers both on site and off used Miglionico's designs to build prototypes and final components.

Miglionico worked on components for the stochastic cooling system that increased collision rates at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. He also worked on magnets for the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Most recently, he was designing components for a coherent electron cooling system being developed to increase collision rates again at RHIC as well as for a possible electron-ion collider upgrade.

"The quality of Gary's work was very good," said Mechanical Design Group Leader Tony Arno, Miglionico's supervisor. "He was a person everyone would go to when they needed help figuring out why something wouldn't work with our Pro/Engineer software—he was our 'Pro/E guru.'"

Arno also said Miglionico—a resident of Center Moriches—was a big Mets and Jets fan, and a dedicated family man, who liked to kayak, go to the beach, and walk on site every day during his lunch break.

"This is a big loss to the group. Everyone liked Gary and looked up to him," Arno added.

Miglionico is survived by his wife Margaret, and daughters Meghan and Kristen.
