UPTON, NY — Almost 550 science projects from 118 Suffolk County schools were entered into the 2010 Elementary School Science Fair, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Laboratory’s Office of Educational Programs coordinated the fair, which was held at the Laboratory on May 1. Brookhaven scientists and local elementary school teachers judged the projects.

The winners are:

• Emily Horan, kindergarten, Longwood School District, for her project titled “The Sandcastle Crusher.”
• Olivia O’Hara, first grade, West Babylon School District, “Fluorescent Memory.” (She was the kindergarten winner in last year’s science fair at Brookhaven Lab.)
• Christopher Scoleri and Nicholas Tournour, second grade, Kings Park Central School District, “Chip Which?”
• Brandon Safranek, third grade, Shoreham-Wading River Central School District, “Air Pressure.”
• Zain Khan, fourth grade, Longwood School District, “Does Multitasking Make Us Less Efficient?”
• Jenny Philbin, fifth grade, Sayville School District, “Police Line – Do Not Cross.”
• Bridget Fabiani, sixth grade, Bayport-Blue Point School District,” How Smart Are Bookworms?”
