Metallized Organoclays as New Fire Retardant Fillers (Hsiao): Commercially available organoclays (Cloisite®) was modified by transition metal ions (TMI) through ion exchange reaction. The morphological studies of metallized clays (SEM, X- ray) confirmed that the transition metal ions were located between mineral interlayer galleries. The TGA data indicated that the presence of TMI shifted the onset of weight loss towards higher temperatures and increased the amount of solid residue at 900oC. The synergy between the viscosity modification by clay dispersion and the char promotion by catalytically active TMI have rendered metallized organoclays a new class of effective fire retardant nanofillers to improve the fire properties of polymer nanocomposites.
