Prevention of Post-Surgery Induced Abdominal Adhesions by Novel Electrospun Bioabsorbable Nanofibrous Membranes (Chu/Hsiao):

Recent reports indicated that current materials used for adhesion prevention have only limited success. The efficacy of electrospun non-woven bioabsorbable nanofiber membranes for the post-operative adhesion prevention was evaluated using an objective rat model. Bioabsorbable membranes of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) were effective to reduce adhesions at the site of injury with particular advantages of composition adjustment, drug (antibiotics) loading capability and easy placement handling. Studies on other bioabsobable materials and electrospinning technique raised a potential for an improved and inexpensive product that is effective in a variety of surgical situations.
