This Organization was initially founded in 1990 to provide a mechanism for opening avenues of communication between the National Synchrotron Light Source, Advanced Photon Source, and the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory. It has since expanded to include all materials sciences, high-energy, nuclear physics, and nanoscience user facilities in the United States. The membership includes User Facility Administrators and User Organization Representatives. The group convenes annually with meetings rotating around facilities. The agenda of these meetings are determined based on input from the membership.

The Group promotes and encourages discussions among user facility administrators, their management, and their user organization representatives by communicating current and future needs, concerns, and trends at its yearly meeting. The Group solicits and disseminates information routinely with the use of electronic mail.

• The 2008 Annual Meeting for NUFO is set for Thursday, April 24 and Friday, April 25 - to be held at the EMSL at PNNL.

One of ten national laboratories overseen and primarily funded by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Brookhaven National Laboratory conducts research in the physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies and national security. Brookhaven Lab also builds and operates major scientific facilities available to university, industry and government researchers. Brookhaven is operated and managed for DOE’s Office of Science by Brookhaven Science Associates, a limited-liability company founded by Stony Brook University, the largest academic user of Laboratory facilities, and Battelle, a nonprofit, applied science and technology organization.
