The weeklong crash course is designed to introduce participants to the best and latest equipment and techniques for macromolecular x-ray crystallography. The students also get to meet and learn from the leading developers of software in the field, and then actually use the NSLS beamlines to collect data. The course is offered by Brookhaven Labs Biology and National Synchrotron Light Source departments, and reflects an educational component of the PXRR (Macromolecular Crystallography Research Resource), funded jointly by the National Center for Research Resources a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Department of Energys Office for Biological & Environmental Research. One of ten national laboratories overseen and primarily funded by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Brookhaven National Laboratory conducts research in the physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies and national security. Brookhaven Lab also builds and operates major scientific facilities available to university, industry and government researchers. Brookhaven is operated and managed for DOE's Office of Science by Brookhaven Science Associates, a limited-liability company founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, the largest academic user of Laboratory facilities, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
