Phytoextraction of radionuclides and metals from soils, Development of permeable subsurface barriers, Decontamination of soil, Characterization of low-level radioactive waste forms, Development of an accelerated leach test, Research in leaching processes and alteration of solid phase of waste forms, Geochemistry of radioactive waste disposal trench leachate, Ocean disposal of low-level radioactive waste.

One of ten national laboratories overseen and primarily funded by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Brookhaven National Laboratory conducts research in the physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies and national security.
