RHIC AGS User’s Meeting 2008

By Abhay Deshpande, Chair Elect, RHIC-AGS UEC

Friends and colleagues, the 2008 RHIC AGS User’s meeting dates have changed since they were first declared. Please mark your calendars: It will be held on May 27- May 30, 2008. The change had to occur to avoid possible clashes with other meetings of interest to our users, and we accept with apologies that it starts immediately on the day after the Memorial Day. Anyone who has tried to organize a meeting these days can attest that it has become extremely difficult to avoid conflicts, sometimes even impossible. We hope these new and final dates will conflict minimally with the interests of RHIC AGS Users and you will participate with your usual enthusiasm.

The change in the dates however does not diminish the excitement we feel as organizers of this meeting regarding its content. We will have a full agenda, and an exciting week:

  • Tuesday 5/27: Workshops on Heavy Ion, Spin, and other topics
  • Wednesday 5/28: A special symposium on “RHIC & its impact on Nuclear Science” and the User’s meeting dinner
  • Thursday 5/29: News from RHIC accelerator and experiments on the Run-8 highlights, message from the funding agencies, various prize distributions, followed by a round-table discussion on “Women in Science” in the evening
  • Friday 5/30: News from non-RHIC based experiments, UEC open forum, election results and last but not the least: a special discussion in the afternoon about career guidance and opportunities for our younger users.

While each day is of great interest and importance to us, I’d like to specially highlight the Symposium on RHIC (5/28): world’s experts in these fields will review in the morning, the greatest achievements of RHIC, and in the afternoon, the opportunities available for RHIC with its luminosity & detector upgrades in near and long term future. A stellar organizing committee including some of the present and past spokespersons of the RHIC-experiments, have joined the UEC chairs in organizing this day and it promises to be an event not to be missed. We look forward to seeing you at the meeting.
