Mirror Magic

Grades 2-5

Experiment with reflective surfaces and mirrors of different shapes. Students discover how the shape of the mirror affects the way light is reflected and find the exciting result of combining mirrors and angles. They also spend time exploring our mirror gallery.
Fourth and fifth graders have the additional challenge of exploring the relationship between the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection.  They will control a beam of light just like the scientists at BNL’s National Synchrotron Light Source.

Vocabulary
mirror, concave, convex, flat, reflect, refract

Lesson Objectives
1) Identify that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object.
2) Discover that smooth, shiny surfaces reflect light.
3) Discover that changing the shape of the mirror deforms the image, and changing the angle of the mirror causes the light to reflect at an angle.
4) Discover that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. (4th & 5th graders)
