Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) is committed to providing funding for outreach initiatives in the local community and Long Island region. BSA allocates funds in support science and math education, for fundraising events for recognized organizations, and supports community, civic, cultural and public awareness activities.

Community Giving

Brookhaven Science Associates supports Long Island organizations that focus their efforts on a diverse population through the Lab’s Corporate Philanthropy Program. The organizations supported during 2013 include:

  • Long Island Housing Partnership
  • Long Island Progressive Coalition
  • Brookhaven Town Interface
  • Island Harvest
  • Tri-Hamlet Organization/William Floyd Community Summit
  • Rebuilding Together Long Island
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Mastics and Shirley Community Emergency Food Center

United Way

The United Way is supported through contributions from employees and from BSA. In 2013 the Laboratory raised a total of $182,338 from employee contributions and from special events that included contests and bake sales, breakfasts, luncheons, the holiday auction, a yard sale, a concert, and more.

BNL Employee Volunteerism

The Stakeholder Relations Office organizes employee-volunteer events throughout the year and assists Brookhaven Employee Recreational Association (BERA) Clubs with individual activities. Recent projects included:

  • BNL employees helped with the construction of a BSA sponsored Habitat for Humanity home for a US Army Veteran and her daughter
  • A fundraising effort by members of the Asian Pacific American Association BERA Club in support of recovery efforts in the Philippines following typhoon Haiyan
  • 24 in-need families “adopted” through Colonial Youth and Family Services Organization by BNL employees during the 2013 Holiday season 
  • BNL volunteers loaded food and supplies at a South Shore food pantry  
  • 200 buckets of cleaning supplies donated to communities along the coast immediately following Super Storm Sandy in 2012
  • Volunteers cleaned up the waterfront and beaches in local communities
