The technology is an appara= tus that uses two conduits to separately feed a liquid phase atmospheric sample and a reagent stream containing a chemiluminescence compound to a chemiluminescen= t detector for detection of the HO2 radical in the liquid phase atmospheric sample. The liquid phase atmospheric sample is produced by treating it with a liquid phase scrubbant= and is subsequently reacted with the luminescent reagent for detection by the chemiluminescent detector.
Commercial and Technical= Merit:
Atmospheric hydroperoxyl (H= O2) radical plays an important role in the formation and transformation of nume= rous atmospheric chemicals. One particular role is the one that it plays in the formation of tropospheric ozone, which is well known as a component of photochemical smog. Thus, there is significant interest= in quantifying atmospheric levels of atmospheric HO2 radicals. However, detection of atmospheric = HO2 radicals is a challenge due to their low abundance and short lifetime. This technology is designed to overcome the difficulties encountered in measuring the elusive atmospheric hydroperoxyl radical.

This technology is suitable= as an additional tool for researchers and industry alike involved in the measurem= ent of atmospheric chemicals. It = is less cumbersome and less costly than existing atmospheric techniques which merely provide indirect measuring capability. This technology provides direct quantitative results, and distinguishes over RO2 where R is a hydrocarbon moiety. In additi= on, the apparatus is light weight, compact and does not have high power requirements.
