Alane is one of the most promising solutions to storing hydrogen for use in hydrogen fuel cells. This technology provides exceptional improvement in solving the difficult problem of economically preparing the material.
Describes methods and materials required for the formation of alanes. The methods rely upon the reduction of the change in free energy of the reaction between aluminum and molecular hydrogen. The change in free energy is reduced by providing Al in a state of high entropy (i.e., disordered) and by increasing the magnitude of the change in enthalpy associated with the reaction between Al and molecular hydrogen.
Aluminum hydride is an attractive alternative to the traditional metal hydrides for the storage of hydrogen for its use as an energy source. The method described here provides a cost effective process to store the hydrogen in a solid state for widespread use in, for example, hydrogen PEM fuel cells.
The aluminum hydride made using the process can be used as a hydrogen storage medium for a number of applications.
